Joshua 11 presents a striking scene of warfare and divine conquest. The northern kings of Canaan unite against Israel, forming a massive army “as numerous as the sand on the seashore” (Joshua 11:4). Yet, in the face of overwhelming opposition, God assures Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, because by this time tomorrow I will hand all of them over to Israel, slain” (Joshua 11:6). With complete trust in the Lord, Joshua leads Israel to victory, subduing the land according to God’s command.
This historical battle foreshadows a greater reality—the final conquest of King Jesus. Revelation 19:16 declares Him as “King of kings and Lord of lords,” the One who will return in power to subdue all enemies and establish His everlasting kingdom. Joshua’s victory in Canaan was a shadow of Christ’s ultimate triumph over sin, death, and Satan.

1. The Gathering of the Enemies: A World United Against God
In Joshua 11, Jabin, king of Hazor, rallies a vast coalition of kings to fight against Israel. The size and strength of this alliance are intimidating—”They came out with all their troops and a large number of horses and chariots, a huge army, as numerous as the sand on the seashore” (Joshua 11:4). Yet, their unity against God’s people guarantees their downfall.
This mirrors the prophetic vision in Revelation, where the world’s rulers and nations will unite in rebellion against Christ. Revelation 19:19 states, “Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse and His army.” Just as the Canaanite kings sought to resist God’s judgment in Joshua’s time, so too will the nations seek to defy Jesus at His return.
But their opposition is futile. The greater Joshua—Jesus Christ—will not only defeat them, but will establish His unshakable reign.
2. The Divine Assurance: Victory Is Certain
When Joshua faced the northern kings, God reassured him, saying, “Do not be afraid of them, because by this time tomorrow I will hand all of them over to Israel, slain” (Joshua 11:6). This promise highlights a crucial truth: victory was not based on Israel’s strength but on God’s power and faithfulness.
Likewise, Jesus, the true King, does not fear His enemies. He reigns supreme, and His victory is guaranteed. Revelation 19:11 describes Him as “Faithful and True,” riding a white horse in righteousness, coming to judge and wage war. His Word is unbreakable, and His kingdom cannot be shaken.
Joshua’s conquest serves as a foretaste of Jesus’ absolute victory, where He will fulfill Psalm 110:1—”Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”
3. The Swift Judgment: Jesus Strikes With Power and Justice
Joshua’s obedience to God’s command led to swift and decisive judgment against the Canaanite kings. The text states, “Joshua captured all these kings and their lands at one time, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought for Israel” (Joshua 11:42). God’s justice was executed completely, ensuring that wickedness was fully removed.
This foreshadows the final judgment when Jesus returns. Revelation 19:15 declares, “Out of His mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations.” He will judge with perfect righteousness, destroying all rebellion against God.
The sword proceeding from Christ’s mouth represents the power of His Word. Just as God spoke creation into existence, He will, with a word, bring an end to all evil.
This is a sobering reminder: no one can stand against Christ unless they are covered by His mercy.
4. The Total Victory: Jesus Establishes His Everlasting Kingdom
Joshua 11 ends with a declaration of conquest: “Then the land had rest from war” (Joshua 11:23). This points to a greater fulfillment in Jesus. After He subdues His enemies, He will establish eternal peace for His people.
Revelation 19:16 declares Him as “King of kings and Lord of lords.” His victory will usher in the reign described in Revelation 21:4—”He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Through Jesus, the greater Joshua, we enter a kingdom where righteousness dwells. His enemies will be no more, and His people will experience eternal joy.
Conclusion: The Call to Surrender or Be Subdued
Joshua 11 and Revelation 19 reveal a vital truth: no one can stand against the King of kings. Every enemy of God will either surrender to His rule or be subdued by His power.
The question is: Will we resist Him, like the Canaanite kings, and face judgment? Or will we submit to Him in faith and receive His mercy?
Now is the time to bow before Jesus, the Conquering King. For those who trust in Him, He is not only the mighty warrior who subdues His enemies but also the loving Savior who welcomes sinners into His kingdom.
