Joshua 3 – Jesus: The Ark of the Covenant Who Makes a Way Through the Waters (John 14:6)

Introduction

The story of Joshua 3 is one of divine intervention, faith, and the miraculous crossing of the Jordan River. It serves as a powerful foreshadowing of Jesus Christ, who is the true Ark of the Covenant, making a way for us where there seems to be no way. In John 14:6, Jesus declares, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Just as the Ark led the Israelites safely through the waters into the Promised Land, Jesus is the One who leads us into the eternal inheritance prepared for us.

The Ark of the Covenant in Joshua 3

As the Israelites prepared to enter the Promised Land, they faced an insurmountable obstacle: the Jordan River at flood stage. God instructed Joshua to have the priests carry the Ark of the Covenant ahead of the people. As soon as the priests’ feet touched the water, the river miraculously stopped flowing, allowing the entire nation to cross on dry ground.

The Ark of the Covenant was the visible sign of God’s presence among His people. It contained the stone tablets of the Law, Aaron’s rod that budded, and manna—a testimony of God’s covenant, authority, and provision. By going ahead of the people, the Ark represented God’s leadership, guidance, and power to overcome barriers.

Jesus: The True Ark Who Leads Us Through

In the New Testament, Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of everything the Ark of the Covenant symbolized.

  1. Jesus is God’s Presence Among Us (John 1:14)
    • Just as the Ark carried the presence of God, Jesus is Immanuel, God with us (Matthew 1:23). He is the divine presence leading His people through life’s trials and ultimately into eternal life.
  2. Jesus Goes Before Us (Hebrews 12:2)
    • The Ark went ahead of the Israelites, leading them to victory. Likewise, Jesus has gone before us in all things—He has conquered sin, death, and the grave (1 Corinthians 15:57). Through His life, death, and resurrection, He has cleared the path to salvation.
  3. Jesus Stands in the Waters for Us (Isaiah 43:2)
    • The priests carrying the Ark stood in the middle of the Jordan until every Israelite crossed safely. Similarly, Jesus stands in the gap for us, holding back the floodwaters of judgment and sin so we can pass safely into God’s promises.
  4. Jesus is the Only Way (John 14:6)
    • The Israelites could not enter the Promised Land on their own; they had to follow the Ark. In the same way, we cannot enter God’s kingdom apart from Jesus. He is the Way, the One who makes the impossible possible.

Crossing the Jordan: A Picture of Salvation

The Jordan River represents the barriers between us and God’s promises. Just as the Israelites had to step into the river by faith, we too must trust Jesus to lead us through obstacles, sin, and trials. The crossing foreshadows the believer’s journey:

  • From Death to Life: Passing through the waters symbolizes baptism—our old life is left behind, and we step into a new life in Christ (Romans 6:4).
  • From Wandering to Purpose: The Israelites had wandered for 40 years, but crossing the Jordan signified a new beginning. When we trust in Jesus, we move from spiritual wandering to divine purpose.
  • From Fear to Faith: The people of Israel had to trust God completely. Likewise, following Jesus requires faith that He will bring us safely through every trial.

Application: How Do We Follow the Ark (Jesus) Today?

  1. Fix Our Eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2)
    • The Israelites were commanded to keep their eyes on the Ark as it moved forward. We must keep our focus on Christ, following Him daily.
  2. Step Out in Faith (2 Corinthians 5:7)
    • The priests had to step into the water before the miracle happened. We too must act in faith, trusting Jesus even when we cannot see the way.
  3. Trust in His Presence and Power (Matthew 28:20)
    • Jesus goes before us, never leaving us alone. Just as the Ark led Israel to victory, Jesus will lead us through every challenge.

Conclusion

The miracle of the Jordan River crossing was not just about entering the Promised Land—it was a divine demonstration of how God makes a way when there is none. Jesus, our Ark of the Covenant, has gone before us, standing in the waters on our behalf, making a way for us to enter into eternal life. As we follow Him, we can be confident that He will guide us safely into His promises.

Are you facing an impassable Jordan in your life? Fix your eyes on Jesus. He is the Way, the One who leads us through the waters into the inheritance God has prepared for us.
